How to Keep Your Wi-Fi Running During a Power Outage

1. Identify Every Device Your Internet Connection Needs

  • Network switch
  • VoIP phone adapter

Some internet providers combine the modem and router into a single gateway. Other installations use several separate devices. If even one essential device loses power, your internet connection may stop working.

2. Back Up Both the Modem and Router

A common mistake is connecting only the Wi-Fi router to a UPS. The router may continue broadcasting a wireless network, but there will be no internet access if the modem or fiber ONT has shut down.

4. Decide How Much Runtime You Need

Consider how long outages typically last in your area. A shorter runtime may be enough to cover brief interruptions, while a larger battery can help maintain connectivity during longer outages.

5. Protect Essential Mesh Wi-Fi Nodes

If your home uses a mesh Wi-Fi system, the main node is usually connected to the modem. Satellite nodes placed throughout the home may be powered from different outlets.

During an outage, backing up only the main node may reduce coverage in other rooms. Connect essential satellite nodes to suitable backup power if continuous whole-home coverage is important.

For longer outages, you can conserve battery power by keeping only the main router and the most important mesh node online.

  1. Confirm that the modem, router, and other network devices are operating normally.
  2. Disconnect the UPS from wall power.
  3. Check that the UPS switches to battery operation.
  4. Confirm that Wi-Fi and internet access remain available.
